Pinballz 1.70

Pinball games on handheld devices have to fulfill a couple of requirements before I’m happy with them. Firstly, is the pinball table varied enough to keep me interested, yet small enough that I don’t lose the ball in some extraneous mini-game? Secondly, does the game make me never want to put it down? Pinballz passes on both counts.

Pinballz includes all the features you’d expect from a game in this category, and avoids making the mistake of being too complicated. Its table has just the right number of targets, bumpers and lights for the player to become truly engrossed in the action. The game’s sound effects aren’t amazing but they are a faithful rendition of old pinball tables’ sounds and it probably wouldn’t make much difference if they were changed. Pinballz uses your PDA's hard buttons to control the flippers, and the joystick controls nudge and tilt. Using the buttons as controls was very easy and reminded me of the fact that pinball was the original inspiration for some of the classic video games invented in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

With its well designed balance between table events and small screen playability, Jason Goldman's Pinballz provides a faithful reproduction of the pinball experience on your Palm powered PDA.
